Don´t you just love those little plaques that are nailed to the end of the church pew in memory of someone in days gone by?
Or the stained glass window with Grandma whomever’s name encased in lead and beautiful rose colored glass. They never seem to bother anyone until the church decides to renovate. I remember Pastor Orland Reynolds from West Virginia talking with a deacon of a former church. The congregation was quite upset because the new young pastor wanted to update the auditorium. The problem? The old tongue and groove pine wood that had graced the sides of the sanctuary since the church"s inception had yellowed and some of the scratches were deep. Heel marks graced the bottom, as did pen and pencil marks. Can you believe that the new pastor wanted to paint that wood white?! The men said, "Pastor Reynolds put that up and we don´t want to CHANGE things!" Pastor Reynolds´ response to those well meaning deacons was, "Gentlemen, that old wood has served its´ purpose. Let the pastor paint the yellow stuff!" They painted it and, in the end, everyone was satisfied.
It´s important that missionaries learn to culturally adjust, but too often we are not willing to do that in these changing times. This past summer, the SMART team was privileged to go to the site in Zambia, Africa where the heart of David Livingstone is buried. Just a short way from that monument, a little plaque also marked the spot where he died. You might ask, "What do change and David Livingstone have to do with each other?" We rode to the very spot where Dr. Livingstone walked. For us, it was only a six hour trip in an air conditioned van, albeit extremely bumpy! Although we were there for just a few moments, he spent years traversing Africa on foot, suffering hardship, illness, loneliness and personal depravation while exploring the Dark Continent and propagating the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
How privileged we are to live during this time in history. In a moment, we can send an e-mail around the world, whereas it took Dr. Stanley months to locate Dr. Livingstone. A plane flight can put us on the other side of the world in just hours complete with luggage … hopefully. The Gospel has spread around the world in ways that David Livingstone could never imagine. Yet, missionary commitment is falling well behind the world population growth rate. Why?
There are some things that should never change: the infallible Word of God, your love for the Lord, your standards of personal and ecclesiastical separation, and your love for others. When we learn to think Biblically and judge changes from a Biblical perspective, it is so much easier to make adjustments. Then change is measured by the doctrine and principles of the Word. When we leave the Word of God out of the equation, change will lead to a downward spiral.
Yes, accepting change is a vital factor in a missionary’s willingness to culturally adapt, learn a new language and love a people that are so much different than you. Don’t be too concerned about the pew plaque, or the pine wood painted white. Be more concerned about the changes you must make so that you can impact a world that needs Jesus Christ before it is eternally too late.

Driving home, it was raining pretty hard, or as the children told me: "It’s really spillin’ out there, miss." A lady hauled out to pass me. When she did, she hydroplaned. Only the Lord kept us from having a head on collision. I was reminded of a message that Pastor Owens had preached on Sunday night about how our God is in front of us, behind us, underneath us, above us, encircling us, and in us. How thankful I am for the presence of God, not just in difficult times, but at all times. At the accident scene, the Lord gave me the opportunity to give out several tracts. The Lord really blessed the Bible clubs this summer. There were so many times when I saw how the Lord had me in the places He wanted me, reaching those children that He had there. I ended up with a total of 15 Bible Clubs and 249 children and witnessed to two different young people who opened up buildings for us. God knows how many children accepted Christ as Saviour this summer. I feel certain that there were children saved in each place.
Rejoicing in Him,

Someone might ask what is necessary for a missionary to know before going to the foreign field. These last two months have brought a few things to mind. Knowledge in the field of linguistics, medicine, auto mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, electricity, general home repair, and correspondence (for prayer letters) would all be useful. A great amount of patience is definitely needed. Of course, this is all above and beyond the Bible courses that almost all missionaries find needful. In reality, the only things that are truly necessary are a calling from the Lord, and a reliance on Him to enable us to do all things – which makes us grateful, because it is impossible to have enough ‘knowledge’ for this calling! The Lord provided an opportunity for us to move out to a village to concentrate on learning Wolof. Boudiouk (sounds like Boojook) is a village of about 500 people located 10 minutes away from Saint Louis. Spending the majority of our time surrounded by Wolof speakers is helping us learn more vocabulary. The only drawback is that some of the people in the village who speak Pulaar, another tribal language, think it is amusing to teach us Pulaar words instead of Wolof. We may be speaking a very interesting mixed tongue when we leave!
We appreciate and need your prayers. Constantly, we feel as if Satan is sending distractions our way to derail us or to keep us too busy to do the things we need to do. Please don’t stop praying!

This past summer has been the greatest time of blessing for our church. Mayu, a 9 year old girl from our Saturday Joy Club, came to church and received Jesus Christ as her Savior. Her mom had no problem with her becoming a Christian. She simply said, "It was her decision."Leon, a young man from Australia, started attending our church. He says he is a Christian and wants to serve the Lord. He has several doctrinal differences. His Japanese girlfriend, Tomomi, also comes to church with him when she is able to. Please pray for her salvation, and for us, as we disciple Leon. 52,000 tracts were passed out during our Nebuta Project. Oftentimes, people would not take a tract from us but turned around and took one from our children. They passed out several thousand tracts themselves and were very enthusiastic. Mrs. Osawa is 81 years old and started coming to church because of a tract she received during the Nebuta Project. She doesn’t want a ride to church. She would rather take the bus and walk the last block. All the effort put into the Project would be worth it all if only she trusted in Jesus. Pray for her salvation.

We have identified 20 ‘open’ countries where we currently have no BIMI missionaries. We are praying that God will send us at least 100 new missionaries over the next five years to start new churches in those countries. This will propel us across 20 new borders, expanding our church planting ministry into more than 100 nations of the world.
THE FAR EAST:
Staggering needs … Astounding Opportunities
Dr. Les Frazier, and wife, Bonnie
Missionaries to Japan 21 years
Far East Director 19 years
Needs and opportunities are a dual necessity for fruitful mission activity. The Far East stands out in this respect. With over one-fourth of the earth’s population, its’ needs are demanding. Yet, opportunities abound for evangelism and church planting. Countries like Japan, Mongolia and Bhutan have less than 1% of their population professing evangelical Christianity. BIMI does not have missionaries in these countries at this time – Mongolia, Taiwan and South Korea. However, YOU can change that fact.
MONGOLIA has a population of approximately 2.8 million. This area of the world has never been as open to the preaching of the Gospel as it is at this time in history. The people are open to the West and its’ influence. There is a great need for young couples to enter this open door.
TAIWAN has 22.9 million people with less than 3% professing evangelical Christianity. It is a stable society with freedom of religion. The door is wide open, but where are more missionaries to step through this door?
Although North Korea is not open to missionaries at this time, SOUTH KOREA is an open door and perhaps the future key to evangelizing North Korea. With a population of 48.5 million, it is a Buddhist based culture. However, there is an open attitude towards the Christian message. May the Lord raise up missionaries for this country. Will you surrender your will to obey Christ’s command to meet the needs of a lost world?

This book is an insightful book dealing with basic issues in missions today. It does not evade the hard topics that the task of missions is facing but seeks to discuss them objectively. It should prove helpful to missionaries, pastors, and those simply interested in missions.

The Fabric of Our Lives
Increasingly the plea for assistance with time management comes to my attention – enough that I’m certain there are many struggling out there to keep their heads above water in our tragically hectic daily pace. Me too! After marriage and immersion into ministry, one thing became crystal clear. If I wanted something done, I was told to ask the busiest person in the church, or do it myself.
I have known four incredible ‘superwomen’ personally – Carolyn, Elaine, Maureen, and Vicki. All wives, mothers, joyfully immersed in ministry, tireless, most with outside jobs at a time when there were no microwaves, dishwashers, or craft stores to make ministry events special. "How do you do it and not lose your mind?" I asked. What one shared helped me immensely to multi-task and to accomplish much for the Lord. Here were her time saving secrets.
"Find a moment best for you to spend some quality time with the Lord. Quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality. It doesn’t always have to be morning, but be sure it is achievable – not two hours every morning when you have a husband and children to feed and get out the door.
In a simple journal from the dollar store, write down the tasks you must accomplish that day. Place them in order of priority. What must be done by noon, by dinner, by bed-time? Work toward those goals. If something has to be ‘rolled over’ to the next section of the day, complete it first before going to the next task. Can anything be overlapped (multi-tasking)? For instance, devotions, breakfast, laundry … a load of laundry could be put in while you prepare breakfast. If alone, you could have your quiet time with the Lord, reading His Word, while eating breakfast. Talk with the Lord frequently throughout your day instead of feeling that you can only do that at one designated time and location.
At day’s end, see what has been accomplished and what must be rolled over to the next day. Schedule a bed-time and a good night’s sleep." She said there are some goals that are weekly (preparing for a Sunday School class), monthly (a ladies’ meeting), quarterly, bi-annually (a special event) or annually (a mission’s conference). Bro. Baughman was taught to never go from one location to another without something in hand. For instance, if you have laundry or dirty towels in the bathroom, gather them up while there and get them to the clothes hamper or laundry area. When leaving the meal table, take the dishes to the sink or dishwasher. You get the idea.
For those who are in Bible College, prioritize your day. Devotions, meals, classes, studying, work, ministry involvement, preparation on short term or long term projects (nibble at them instead of leaving them for last minute), rest. Remember! How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Add laundry and social events as time allows or … when your closet and drawers become empty. Watch out for social times and e-mail. While fun, they can be tremendous time eaters. If you just don’t have enough hours in the day, be a time detective for 48 hours. List the tasks – be that phone, computer, student center, talking with roommates – and the time you spent with those activities. You’ll see where those minutes are mysteriously disappearing. We all have 24 hours in a day. There IS a reason why some get more accomplished than others.
For those on deputation or furlough, devotions and ministry preparation are critical. Travel time can be preparation time with a laptop, a cell phone to contact pastors, an appointment book, thank you notes, and a spouse who can share driving responsibilities. On those days in between meetings, clean the vehicle inside and out, do the laundry and ironing, or get those suits to the cleaners. Get organized so it doesn’t look like a hurricane hit the inside of your vehicle. In this day of clear containers, have one for ministry items, one for small office supplies, one for kid’s toys, one for toiletries and one for trash. Empty the trash when you stop for bathroom breaks. Perhaps you can go visiting with a pastor, help with a work project at the church, or have an unscheduled activity. And … one more thing … check the routes you travel for sightseeing and educational opportunities for your children. Take time to see things. It is helpful and fun for home schoolers and many things are free.
For those on the field, you are often faced with no modern time saving devices, cooking from scratch (no pre-prepared food), doing laundry the old-fashioned way, no water, no convenience stores for that item you don’t have. Husbands can’t run to the nearest Home Depot for building supplies or Wal-Mart Super Center to see what’s wrong with the car. In many instances, it is going back in time doing things the way your great-grandmothers did them. It actually can be fun on some days! Really!
Just as fabrics are different, so are we. Whether the fabric of your life is being a perfectionist who would prefer to wait until everything can be done just right, or whether you are an unorganized, messy … you can learn to make a list, prioritize, accomplish those tasks daily and sleep with much less stress so you can be at your best for ministry wherever that may be and winning the lost for Christ right where you are.
