"The happiest people are those who have invested their time in others."

Lately I have been reading about investments of time and money. Someone has rightly said, "The happiest people are those who have invested their time in others. The unhappiest people are those who wonder how the world is going to make them happy." I think missionaries must be some of the happiest people anywhere.

Maylou and I returned recently from visiting BIMI missionaries in Switzerland, Slovakia, Poland, Latvia, and the Czech. Republic. We enjoyed being with them in their homes; we laughed a lot, had fun with their kids, went to their churches, and took a few photos which are included in this magazine. Anyway, as I was saying, in spite of many inconveniences and difficulties, we found the level of spiritual commitment, dedication, and sacrifice from missionaries to be very impressive. We came back to the States humbled by their examples of Christ-likeness. These Christ-like examples impact their worlds for Christ. Maylou and I came back asking how our lives are impacting those around us.

Remaining in Christ is essential to usefulness and happiness of all God’s people. The essence of happiness and holiness is not rigid adherence to a certain code of standards and rules. It is the believer’s living union with Christ, a mutual abiding made possible through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit. In other words, it is our personal relationship with Christ that will produce true holiness and happiness.

I came back from Europe asking these questions: Can I improve my investments of time and money in the work God has given me to do? How can I improve my relationship with Jesus Christ? Meeting with our missionaries has greatly challenged me to go on for the Lord. May I ask about your relationship with Christ? Is He your Savior? Does He matter most?

The key to maintaining this kind of life is found in the words of Jesus: "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." (John 15:4, 5)

BY GLENN PALMER

Glenn and Charlotte Palmer are church planters in England.)

What a blessing to serve the Lord on the mission field! Besides planting a church here in Spalding, England, and teaching in the School of Evangelism in Corby, we have seen the Lord broaden our ministry in the last ten years. We have an Armenian family, Ivan and Sona Pambakian, attending our church. Our church is allowed to use their small farm for youth and camp ministries. It was through contact with them that we became aware of the plight of the people of Armenia in 1994. I have travelled to Armenia three times. My heart was touched as I observed the difficulties of the people and their bare existence.

Therefore as the Lord gives opportunity to help, Charlotte and I along with Ian, Andrew, Elizabeth, Christine, Malwyn and Mary go the farm to sort and pack clothes, label and weigh the boxes, and inventory the goods for shipping that come from all over Great Britain.

For the last ten years we have been averaging three to four forty-foot containers per year, each containing 1200 boxes of goods packed in 40 pound apples boxes. About 42,000 boxes of humanitarian and Christian material have been sent. "Little is much when God is in it." All of this work has been donated in everyone’s spare time. It does not end here as the containers are received in Armenia by the Pambakians, who travel there to distribute every item to the needy. Thankfully a wealthy American Armenian pays all the transportation costs.

Packing boxes for Armenia

The Lord has Mrs. Sona Pambakian and several Armenian believers who are linguists translating the Bible into the Eastern Armenian language. The New Testament was complete in 2005, and the Trinitarian Bible Society of London has printed 20,000 which arrived in Armenia just before Christmas 2005. Ten thousand copies of the booklet "Firm Foundation" was translated by Mrs. Pambakian and printed in Ireland. These materials have been distributed to a good number of churches in Armenia for teaching aids. The translation of the Armenian Bible should be completed in this next year.

The Lord is great and greatly to be praised. Please pray for this work and especially the church planting ministry of the Palmers here in England.

BY DON HUGHES

Don & Helen Hughes Missionaries to England

In June of 1991, my wife, Helen, and I were looking for a place to celebrate our anniversary together. We drove up to the Lake District in the north of England, one of the most beautiful places in all of Great Britain.

The June days were long, so on our first night we were able to take a boat ride around the lake at nine in the evening while it was still daylight. The lakes are circled by several beautiful mountain ranges.

As we were walking down to the lake we noticed to our right a gate that allowed us to enter a series of sheep pastures across some beautiful rolling hills, a favorite walking place of many of the tourists.

As it drew near night we decided to take a walk through the pastures. Apparently, because of the presence of tourists in the pasture, the sheep never lie down. Helen had tried to pet one of the lambs but he ran away.

The sheep also seemed frightened by the constant lapping of the lake water. We noticed they would only drink from a small artesian spring coming from the ground.

Over the next few days we took several walks to the edge of the lake and we watched the sheep. We never saw them lie down; they seem to be always afraid. On the last day of our vacation, we wanted to take one more walk in the pasture before we had to leave. A man arrived in a jeep and stopped at the gate. He got out of the jeep and opened the back door to allow a beautiful black and white sheep dog to jump out. Then he reached into the back seat and pulled out a long staff. It seemed as he opened the gate and entered the pasture that some unseen director stood and raised his hands. Every sheep in that pasture suddenly turned toward the shepherd, moving in his direction. When they gathered around him, we saw them lie down for the first time. The shepherd then left them and walked over a hill and was gone for 15 or 20 minutes. I later asked him where he had gone.

He told me that he had to go to another pasture to see about another flock of sheep. The amazing thing was that while he was gone to the other pasture and even though tourists were still walking in the pasture, those sheep remained as if they were not afraid any longer. You see, the shepherd was in the pasture. They may not have been able to see him, but they knew he was coming back for them.

Sometimes we are unsettled and afraid here on the mission field, but we are reminded that the Shepherd is in the pasture, even when we cannot see Him. We know that He is coming back for us and that He has promised never to leave us.

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Puppets in Hungary

(Charin, her husband Marc and children are BIMI missionaries in Hungary)

We have really enjoyed doing the puppet shows in the schools. There is a wide open door to the public schools that amazes me. They are more than happy to have a group from a church come and present a good quality, entertaining program to the kids. People here in Hungary still have a respect for religious holidays that we have been able use to our advantage.

Our first time we used the puppet ministry was Christmas, 2004, in five schools and a home for the mentally disabled. We were a bit hesitant at first as to how the administrations would receive us, but we were very pleasantly surprised at their enthusiasm. They all allowed us to come back at Easter. This past Christmas we were able to be in seven schools, and I am praying the Lord will allow us to increase that number this year.

The puppet team and Charin Patton (center)

It is so exciting to return to a school and have the kids all come out with shining faces, greeting us like long lost friends. Most of these kids would never be allowed to come to church, and yet right there in the school we are able to tell them of Jesus and his love.

One of the songs we taught last year at Easter was "My God is So Great, So Strong and So Mighty." At one point I was overcome with emotion watching hundreds of children singing God's praises! I do not know how many have accepted Christ (we do not give an open invitation), but I am trusting God that the many little seeds we have planted will someday bear fruit to His glory.

(Kelley Bell, her husband Mark, and their two sons serve the Lord as church planters in Peterborough, England. As the result of a sledding accident when she was a small child, Kelley has lived with braces, crutches and pain. Through it all, she has been a constant encouragement to her family and all who meet her. Here is an exciting sequel to her story we printed in EUROPE 2003.)

When we came back to America in 2005, we thought it would be for a very short medical furlough. Little did we know that it would result in my having spinal fusion surgery on November 3, 2005.

For the past 28 years, I have worn a built-up shoe on my left foot. This is a result of my physical handicap that I have had since being a child. My build-up was 1 ½ inches. Before the surgery, I asked my surgeon, Dr. Suh, if the surgery would make a difference in my leg lengths. He said that he didn’t think so.

When I was discharged after the surgery, I was instructed to "walk! walk! walk!" That is exactly what I did. As Mark began to go walking with me, he noticed that I couldn’t walk a straight line. He jokingly said that I was walking like a drunk woman.

Upon closer examination, we discovered that my legs appeared to be even. On my post-op appointment, Dr. Suh examined me and told me that I was "dead even." He told me that I no longer needed a built-up shoe. I could hardly contain my joy.

Psalm 1201 says, "In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and He heard me." I know that the Lord heard my cry and has wonderfully answered my prayer! Not only did He get me out of the terrible pain, but He did exceedingly abundantly above all that I could ask or think by giving me two perfectly even legs after 28 long years.

The Carnicle Family

Tim and Brant Holladay in Konstanz, Germany, where Jon Huss died for his faith.

As Tim and Barbara Carnicle work towards starting a church in their village of Kummertshausen, Switzerland, their four children are serving as effective missionaries alongside their parents.

Since home-schooling their children is illegal in their country, the Carnicle family has turned their attendance in the public schools into a mission opportunity. All four of their children are outstanding students in their schools and active in community outreach. They are fluent in German as well as their native English. George and James are also fluent in conversation with French; Esther and Samuel are presently taking the French language in school.

When God calls a couple to the mission field, He also can use the children in the family as very effective emissaries for Him in the community.

Swiss European Youth Parliament Delegation

By James Carnicle

The teacher responsible for the Swiss European Youth Parliament delegation asked me if I would help him by using my English and French language capabilities as ambassador to the conference in Paris, France. As ambassador, I would be required to give a speech and act as main representative for the delegation. After praying with my parents about it, I agreed to go.

On Friday the 24th of March, our delegation flew from Zurich to Paris where we met a few of the 31 delegations from all over Europe. All participants had chosen a topic concerning Europe and the European Union to discuss at the conference. We ambassadors gave our speeches during the Opening Ceremony on Monday. Committees put together by the present delegates began discussing their topics Monday afternoon and concluded on Wednesday by writing a resolution. This resolution contained the various decisions made by the committee.

Beginning on Friday we defended our resolutions in front of the other committees, discussed and voted on them. Several representatives of the European Parliament and other government associations sat in on the General Assembly discussions with the goal of presenting our resolutions to the European Union Parliament.

At the closing ceremony, we all received diplomas stating we had participated in the 51st European Youth Parliament session of 2006. I am grateful for having been asked to attend because I was able to polish my language skills and to meet people who came from all corners of Europe, such as Norway, Greece, Spain or France. Most importantly, I was able to witness to several of the delegates who were quite interested in hearing about Christ, Heaven, and salvation.

In conclusion I would like to state that having acted as ambassador, there is no doubt in my mind that being an ambassador for Christ is a much greater honor than representing a mere country.

Open Doors in Switzerland

By George Carnicle

On Wednesdays in my high school here in Switzerland I have two lessons of religion. My teacher (who is the pastor of the Reformed Church in Romanshorn) had asked me if I would be willing to tell my class what Baptists are. He gave me ten minutes to say what I wanted about Baptists. So I did!

What better way is there to tell them what we are, than by telling them what we believe? What I ended up doing was basically reading Bible verses to my class. I didn’t tell them the Romans road, but, as you know, that isn't the only way to led someone to Christ. All my classmates, my teacher and a young woman who was there, who wants to study Catholic theology in Luzern, listened as I told them how to get to Heaven.

After my presentation, some of my classmates had some questions for me. One girl asked me "what repenting of your sin is and how to do that." So I told her it was asking Jesus to forgive her of her sin. She accepted that answer. I am sure I gave my listeners something to think about and I hope that someday someone will get saved as a result of what I was able to say in class.

The Johnson Family

For almost thirteen years, Darrell and Glenda Johnson have faithfully served God, learning the Polish language well and loving the Polish people to the Lord. They are establishing a church in Krakow, Poland, a city of great historical significance.

Considered the cultural capital of Poland, Krakow is a city of 770,000. One cannot visit Krakow without learning of her history. During the German invasion in World War II, incredibly brave Poles tried to defend their homeland as well as the Jewish people who lived there.

Krakow is home to the Nazi camps Auschwitz and Birkenau. They are symbols of terror, genocide, the Holocaust and the terrible depravity of man. Hearing the names of the camps still causes one to shudder, considering the horrible atrocities enacted there from 1940-1945.

The number of people murdered there reaches between 1.1 to 1.5 million. The majority of prisoners were deported Jewish people. But many Polish prisoners died there (many a part of the Polish Resistance who defended the Jews), as well as prisoners from other occupied countries.

Today the people of Krakow work diligently to maintain a memorial at Auschwitz and Birkenau to honor those who died.. It has been determined: "This camp-museum shall be preserved for eternity as a place of remembrance, tribute and warning."

The Thompson Family in Latvia

For almost thirteen years, Darrell and Glenda Johnson have faithfully served God, learning the Polish language well and loving the Polish people to the Lord. They are establishing a church in Krakow, Poland, a city of great historical significance.

Near Riga, Latvia, Jonathan and Mary Thompson and their daughters are working to establish a church in the village of Lielvarde. Meighan, who plays the violin, and Emily, who plays the flute, have been able to use their musical training as an outreach to their teachers.

Besides their church-planting responsibilities, the Thompson family minister to a children’s hospital that serves a large area of Latvia. God has opened this great door of opportunity to go into farm homes and villages they otherwise would not be able to reach.

The area where they are serving is rich with history. Near Riga we saw this memorial to Jews who were slain during the war.

The etching on the memorial states:

Here in the forest of Rumbula, on November 30 and December 8 of 1941, the Nazis and their local collaborators shot dead more than 25,000 Jews – the prisoners of the Riga Ghetto – children, women, old people, as well as around 1000 Jews deported from Germany. In the summer of 1994, hundreds of Jewish men from the concentration camp "Riga-Kaiserwald" were killed here.

The snow-filled woods outside of Riga contain a memorial that gripped our hearts as we read the inscription.

Duane Hearron, our missionary in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, writes:

"A group from our church canvassed with tracts the Russian Siberian village of Shela, located 55 miles north of Krasnoyarsk. We had 27 people from the village who attended our first meeting. Each received a free New Testament. At another meeting we had 17 young people attend with the added surprise of the village mayor coming to check out our activities. Each person attending is presented with a free New Testament provided for and shipped to us by BIMI. These kids have shown an interests to learn about the Bible and of our Savior Jesus Christ. Already a small handful have begun to memorize and recite Bible verses."

We still need your help to provide God’s Word to those who do not have it.

David Sterling Family. Igor, a member of the local Police Special Forces Unit in Krasnoyarsk, gave testimony how he and a senior officer (a Christian) stood in full "spetznaz" gear discussing salvation.
