French-speaking Canada used to be a field where
one ran into zealous Catholics. One still might,
especially in smaller towns, but truthfully, most
of the zeal we personally encounter comes from
North African Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, or
other immigrants who have chosen Canada as
their home. On a week-to-week basis, I have
to deal with African animistic beliefs, Asian
ancestor worship, and Caribbean religion. As
