The View from the Top of the World
Dr. J.B. Godfrey
Far East Director
In July, my wife Linda and I had the unique experience of visiting the world’s tallest building. BIMI missionaries to Taiwan, Jonathan and April Flowers, took the elevator with us to the observation deck of the building they call Taipei 101. The elevator is the world’s fastest, traveling at 55 feet per second. It took a little over 30 seconds to reach our perch 1,671 feet above the streets of Taipei. From the top of this building we looked out over more than six million people. Only a handful of missionaries are in this city or, for that fact, in the country of Taiwan. The Flowers are the first BIMI missionaries to surrender to this needy field as a result of the 100 Nations Project. We thank the Lord for touching the hearts of this fine young couple and calling them to this country with the Gospel of Christ. Looking out upon the vast expanse of humanity so far below us, we were moved to ask the Lord to send more!
The six million plus people of Taipei made me think of cities like Tokyo, with its forty million plus. Then there is Kansai with more than twenty million. We could add Manila, Hong Kong, Honolulu and Beijing to this list. But alas, where would I stop? After all, one-fourth of the population of the world resides in the Far East. Korea, China, Mongolia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the Micronesian Islands, and Hawaii are some of the populous places of the Far East.
My heart is so burdened for this region of great contrasts! Rich and modern countries share the same continent with extremely poor and needy ones. Difficult and challenging areas that take years to win someone to Christ sit side-by-side with some of the most open, tenderhearted countries in the world. Everywhere we go in the Far East, our hearts are stirred and touched! More than one and a half billion people, most of them having no clear understanding of the Gospel message, are waiting for someone to help them. Buddism, Shintoism, Communism, Catholicism and Islam dominate this area of the world. We need many more missionaries to go! Would you go or help send our missionaries with the wonderful, hope-filled message of Christ?
The BIMI work in Japan has seen some miracles in this difficult country. However, most of the missionaries there are getting older and only one-fourth of one percent of the Japanese are Christians. There are great needs in this beautiful country.
The country of the Philippines is one of the most open countries to the Gospel in all the world. BIMI missionaries are working from the far south in the city of General Santos to the far north in the city of Laoag. Some of the churches are having thousands attend the services. Missionaries are being sent to other countries. One of these missionaries is in the African country of Uganda and his church ministers to over a thousand people each Sunday. Our missionaries are often called to serve in difficult circumstances, but what blessings they are seeing!
Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Mongolia all need workers. There are no BIMI missionaries in any of these countries at this moment. The Flowers are on deputation for Taiwan and Andrew and Elena Au are raising support for Hong Kong, but they need help! Would God use you to help these families open these fields, or one of the other countries of the Far East? You can contact me at 423-344-5050 or
