Camping Down Under
by Robert Meyer and Barb Tucker

Camping “down under” doesn’t take place in July or August. Australians camp in the hot, dry months of December, January, and February. But camping anywhere and anytime means much the same-- fun, recreation, and a retreat from the pressures of everyday life to focus on God’s word.

Up until now, the churches planted by BIMI missionaries in Australia have been renting a campground for their camping purposes. Camping has been popular with the churches. This January, 176 people representing seventeen churches attended camp, where ten young people professed Christ as their Saviour. Many other decisions were made by saved young people.

However, the churches would benefit from having their own campground. Such a property has come available, thanks to a Christian businessman in Australia. He has leased ten acres to the churches, free for fourteen years.

Tim Meyer, BIMI missionary, has been chosen to administer the land and direct the camp ministry, which has been named Queensland Baptist Ministry.

Unfortunately, the land presently is undeveloped. The first stage of making it useful for camping will be a rest room facility, which will include shower stalls. The potential cost is $14,000 for this first step in making the property usable.

Many of us appreciate what camping has meant to us, and want to share that experience with others. Those interested in helping the churches in Australia obtain their own campground with full facilities, contact Robert Meyer, Southeast Asia Director for BIMI.
