Who Am I? — (does it really matter?)
by Dr. Don Sisk
God Speaks — The question that Moses asked followed a direct confrontation with God. Moses saw a burning bush and turned aside to see the bush. It burned, but was not consumed. From that bush, God spoke to Moses. He told Moses that He had heard the cry of the children of Israel. We should take heart from this knowledge. The Israelites had sinned against God. They had done all the things that He had forbidden. However, when they cried, He heard and helped them.
God is Concerned — Moses was probably very pleased to hear that God was concerned about the condition of the Israelites. He had tried in his own strength to help them, but had miserably failed. For forty years he had been a fugitive. However, he had not forgotten his loved ones and his countrymen in Egypt. Perhaps joy filled his heart as he thought of God delivering the Israelites from their Egyptian bondage. Everything was exciting to Moses until God made an unexpected statement.
God Instructs — Exodus 3:10: Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
Moses speaks — “who am I …? “Can you imagine the thoughts of Moses? You are going to send me to Pharaoh? The last contact I had with Pharaoh, he was planning to kill me because I had killed an Egyptian. You are going to send me to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt? I could not solve a simple problem between two of the Israelite men. “Who am I?” An interesting thought about this incident is that God never bothered to tell Moses who Moses was. God answered, “Certainly, I will be with thee.”
God is the “I AM” — When we get a glimpse of God and the tremendous tasks He has for us, the logical question would be, “Who am I?” When we feel big and important, it is evident we have not been near God. Throughout the Bible and throughout history when people have drawn near enough to God to get a clear look at Him, they have invariably and inevitably fallen at His feet and acknowledged His majesty and their own insignificance.
God Calls, Equips, and Supplies — There are many great tasks to be performed today. God often chooses some very unlikely people for those tasks. Recently, I either heard or read the statement, “God never calls anyone to anything that person can do.” If He called us to do that which we could do in our own power, we would not need Him. Thus, He calls us to do that which is impossible to do in our strength that we might be compelled to depend on Himalone.
As we live in the year approaching Y2K, there are many uncertainties. However, there are many great opportunities. God has called us as believers to “occupy till He comes.” It may be soon! We have a great task. We are to evangelize this generation. Humanly speaking, that appears to be an impossibility. However, with God nothing is impossible. He can use anyone who will utterly abandon to His calling. Thank God He has chosen to use someone as unworthy as I am. I have asked many times, “Who am I?” and so often I have realized it really does not matter who I am. He said, “I will be with you.” That is enough for me.
God Gives the Victory — The Lord was with Moses. Moses did his job well. The Lord was with Joseph. Joseph faced many difficult situations but he was victorious. David overcame many obstacles in his journey to the throne of Israel because God was with him. We should shout with Paul, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” And then say with him, “ . . . we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.” With confidence in our ever present Lord, let us march onward for His glory!
