Iceland became an independent republic in 1944. Dominated over previous centuries by Norway and Denmark, Iceland does not hesitate to defend its territorial waters from foreign fleets taking Cod illegally. The little nation of 275,000 takes its national sovereignty very seriously. It is a member of NATO and there is an US airbase present.
The Lutheran Church is traditionally the main religion, yet BIMI established a Baptist presence in the past when Ferrell and Barbara Kearney were missionaries in Iceland back in the 1960s. Though the Kearneys today serve in Wales, other BIMI missionaries are laboring with blessing and accomplishment near the capital, Reykjavik. Their church is small but well established. Other workers are needed to branch out to new areas.
