By Erik Johnson - Missionary in Dominican Republic Mathew 9:36 states But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. The city of San Francisco de Macorís lies nestled in the northern part of the Dominican Republic. We have served in this city since 2009. Early on in our ministry we became acquainted with an area of town known as Vista del Valle, View of the Valley. This area of town has a population of approximately 50,000 people and is well known for its high crime and delinquency rate as well as its extreme poverty. Due to these severe circumstances, many people feel their only escape is to turn to drugs, prostitution, and crime. In Vista del Valle there are dozens of Pentecostal churches, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and of course, a strong Catholic presence, without one Gospel preaching church. We have made many efforts to reach this community with the Gospel but all of our efforts seem to just fall flat—until one day when Ari Amparo and Wilfredy Sanchez walked into our church. Ari accepted Christ as his personal Savior when he was 17. He began attending a Pentecostal church but as he studied the Scriptures, he realized what he was reading in his Bible was different than what was being taught. He began praying that the Lord would send him a pastor who could teach him the Word of God and train him so that he could reach his neighbors with the Truth. Wilfredy, Ari’s uncle who was also a believer, was directed to our church by a mutual friend. He commented that it was very refreshing to find a church that opened the Word of God and taught exactly what it says. Very shortly after attending Truth Baptist Church, both Wilfredy and Ari desired to be trained as preachers of the Gospel. As we were busy training Ari and Wilfredy, God began showing us His amazing provision for this project. A
