Cambridge, England After his arrival in China at the age of 25, he inherited a fortune from his father’s estate. C.T. felt led to give his entire fortune to Christ. C.T. Studd’s philosophy was that if he were to live by faith in God, he could not rely on his personal fortune. He gave £5,000 ($340,000) to Moody, £5000 to George Mueller, and hundreds of thousands to other ministries. Later, he gave even more thousands away to the Lord’s work. Priscilla studd He had been in China three years when he met and married Priscilla Livingstone Stewart, a young Irish missionary. Days before the wedding, Charles gave several hundred thou- sand dollars, his remaining money, to his bride as a wedding gift. Her response was, “Charles, what did the Lord tell the rich young man to do?” “Sell all.” Well then, we will start clear with the Lord at our wedding.” That ended the inheritance. The Studds had blessed thousands in the Lord’s work by their gifts but now they had only God to rely upon. C.T. and his wife spent many years on various mission fields including China, India, and Africa. In Africa he suffered sickness and several heart attacks, but he plodded on. Toward the end of his life, C.T. Studd stated that as far as he could discern, there was nothing left in his life to sacrifice. He had given his all to Christ and His service. He had given his fortune away to George Muller’s orphanage, to Hudson Taylor’s China Inland Mis- sions, and to many others. Lives had been changed, little children fed, missionaries supplied, and heaven’s gate opened to mul- titudes. And when he was fin- ished, he had nothing but pos- sessed everything. Once F.B. Meyer asked C.T. Studd what was the secret of his closeness with God. He pulled out a set of keys, held one up and said, “Give the last key to your heart to Christ─hold nothing back.” It was shortly after 10:30 p.m. in July 1931 that C. T. Studd closed his eyes for the last time on earth. The last word he spoke was “Hallelujah!” He had given his fortune away, but through sacrifice he brought thousands out of their darkness and in… ─ touch with God! Forward Ever, Backward Never! “Some wish to live within the sound of Church or Chapel bell; I want to run a Rescue Shop within a yard of hell.” — C.T. Studd NATIONS • 9
