Missions By David Harris Like the men on the Emmaus Road, missions affects our hearts. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures (Luke 24:32 emphasis added )? Does missions affect your heart? You may be sitting in a church service listening to a man share his heart for a faraway place. God begins to work. Then you realize God is leading you to get involved in this great task of going into all the world. Where do you start? What do you do? How does one get started in missions? For me, the call to missions came through a very unusual set of circumstances. It is not always easy to discern the Lord’s leading when our hearts are so often moved for the people and places of the world we hear about in special services. We may think, “Is God calling me?” At times like these, it is vital to keep our focus on the Word and to stay in communication with our pastor. These are the means God gives to help us know more about His leading in our lives. We do not want to regulate our thoughts by mere emotion or consider going far from home based on a whim. We must know this is of God. This is how I found myself as a young person. God puts it into the hearts of His people to do something for Him. During captivity Nehemiah was moved when he heard a report about his homeland. He cried, fasted, prayed, and repented. In this great awakening to the needs of God’s work and ways and after much prayer, Nehemiah makes an interesting statement. He had gone before the king to find God’s favor had been granted. Now what? Nehemiah says in chapter 2 verse 12 that the things he had spoken to the king represented what God had placed in his heart. When God has placed something in your heart, it is time to get busy. This may mean it is time to get busy in your local church. God has ordained this as the starting place. It is here that you learn to serve, give, go, and pray. It is also from here that God calls into His harvest. If He has called and your pastor and church recognize that call, it is wise to seek help. 10 BIMI WORLD Number 1, 2016
