seconds to 10 minutes. We would spend the
next three days in Pediatric Intensive Care
Unit in Colorado Children’s Hospital while
additional tests were completed, results were
read, and treatment plans were developed.
We left there and embarked on a long journey
back to North Carolina where MJ could see
more doctors and have more tests to try
and nail down exactly what was causing
these seizures. A local neurologist shared
that based on all the tests and findings the
only explanation was that they were febrile
seizures. This explanation is scary because
it means that she can get one anytime she
has a fever, but it is a blessing because she
can easily grow out of these as she gets older.
Over the next six months she would have
five more that did not cause concern because
she would experience the seizure then be
back to her normal sweet, active personality.
All of that changed on December 31, 2023,
when she had her third seizure in 24 hours.
The third seizure was a little different and
more dramatic. Instead of just going limp
and her eyes rolling back into her head, her
lips turned blue and her breathing stopped.
This was the most frightening of all
and caused more concern than ever.
Thankfully, we had rescue medicines
that stopped the seizure and we rushed
her to the hospital. During that visit it
was decided to take proactive steps
rather than reactive ones. The doctors
decided MJ needed to be on a seizure
medication to prevent them from
taking place. She has now been taking
that medicine for several months and
she has experienced several fevers but
has not had seizures like the previous
times. Just as in all steps of this journey,
God once again proved to be faithful.
We have found Him to be good.
Beyond that, He has taught us lessons

that will be valuable in every aspect of life
that God places us in the coming months
and years. He has taught us to trust when
nothing seems to go the way one thinks it
should go. He has taught us the importance
of having a real relationship with Christ
that is constantly growing and deepening
each day. He has taught us the necessity of
having people and churches from around
the country going boldly before the throne
of God on our behalf. Through it all, God
continues to bring back a quote that a pastor
shared with us during the darkest moment.
He said, “You cannot be used by God until
you have been through the fire.” We have
but we have now come forth as gold and we
have seen and experienced the very thing
that Isaiah 55:8–9 says, For my thoughts are
not your thoughts, neither are your ways my
ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are my ways higher
than your ways, and my thoughts than your
thoughts. W
