This nation, nearly the size of South Dakota, is the westernmost country in Africa and not far removed from the Sahara. With predominately Islamic neighbors, Senegal is a strategic country for the evangelism of North Africa. While Islam is present in force, the country’s government is largely secular giving the missionary freedom to openly proclaim the Truth, and allowing its people an opportunity to pursue it.
Coastal trade first brought European powers to its shores, the French eventually claiming it as a colony. After over a century, Senegal was merged with Mali, which was also a French colony, and the countries were jointly given autonomy in 1960. Although this union of countries did not last long, Senegal was not hesitant to attempt another union a few years later...this time, with the country of The Gambia. This merge proved to be no more successful than the first and was eventually dissolved.
The green stripe in its flag represents Islam and the progress it brings. Yet, while over 95% of the country are professing Muslims, the religion has done little for its people while luring them into eternal darkness. Over forty-percent of the Senegalese are considered entirely unreached. Yet, there is hope! A secular government gives the missionary an open door. While French is the official language, there are several national languages, which have a New Testament already translated. Since most of its population is rural and only a little more than half of its sixteen-million citizens are literate, day-to-day relationships will be key in reaching the Senegalese for Christ. May we take advantage of this great opportunity while the door remains open!
