Botswana had an unusual beginning: in the late 1800’s, the country sent a delegation of local chiefs to England soliciting its protection over their landlocked country. When England later granted them independence, the country continued to thrive and has remained remarkably free of conflict, becoming one of the most prosperous and peaceful African nations today. The mining and export of diamonds is its largest national industry; however, it is said that Botswana is one of the least corrupt nations in this region. With the Kalahari Desert in the southwest, most of the population is located in the eastern or central regions. Over 70% of the population are urbanized, many living near Gaborone, its capital city. English is the official language and literacy is relatively high - which are particular blessings to the missionary. There is a complete Bible translated into Setswana, the most widely spoken African language in the country. With all these advantages, it is truly sad that so few missionaries have taken advantage of the open door this country represents. While Botswana claims Christianity, it is not the Christianity of the Bible. In reality, many of the people follow an extremely dangerous form of the Charismatic Movement. An abundance of false religions and many tribal traditions abound, and few of Botswana’s people find the true Way of salvation.
