Donald was saved at a revival meeting when he was ten years old. Watching his father's enthusiasm to preach and share the Gospel with others, Don knew that God was calling him to be a preacher like his dad. He enrolled at Moody Bible Institute in 1965.
Carolyn was saved at a Youth for Christ Rally when she was fourteen. Although her parents did not attend church, Carolyn grew up attending a Gospel-preaching church nearby. Her pastor encouraged her to attend Moody Bible Institute after high school. That is where she met Donald, and they were married after graduation in 1968. Don then completed his studies at Trinity College and Dallas Seminary.
MINISTRY SUMMARY
Don served as a pastor for 20 years in Ohio and Pennsylvania. At the 1st missions conference of Bible Baptist Church in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Ray Thompson preached on "Your response to God’s open doors." In April 1990 God used that message to call Don and Carolyn to the mission field. In June 1990 he and Carolyn were accepted by BIMI to become missionaries in Mexico. After two years of deputation, they (and their nine children) left for Mexico in a big red and white school bus! On August 14, 1992, the Carney family spent their first night in Mexico!
Upon arriving in Guadalajara, Mexico, they began studying Spanish. The first three years they worked with missionary Weldon Jones in a village south of the city. Their second term they worked in Guadalajara establishing the Huentitan Baptist Church with Pastor Enrique Venegas.
After a furlough in the United States in 2001, they relocated to Mérida, Yucatán, with their three youngest children. They began by helping Pastor Manuel Verde with his church and Bible institute. Many people heard the Gospel and were saved. While they enjoyed helping Pastor Verde in the Bible institute, Don felt that it was time to move on and plant a church in another part of the city. Their son Jeff and his wife joined them in establishing the Peninsula Baptist Church in Las Aguilas. They built a thriving group of young people. Two of those teens, Oso Valdez and Glendy, got married, and he later became the pastor of the church in 2015. Another young couple, Israel and Nancy, were called to plant a church in Sitpach.
After turning the church over to Pastor Oso, Don and Carolyn began working in some of the more than 2,000 surrounding villages in Yucatán, Mexico. Don also helped the Beautiful Baptist Church in the village of Tahdzibichen. They had been without a pastor for twenty years. He was able to disciple one of their men (Antonio) and prepare him for his ordination to be the pastor of the church.
In 2022, Don and Carolyn moved back to the United States after 30 years of ministry in Mexico. Now as Assistance & Relief Missionaries they continue to visit Mexico several times each year and help the work there with literature and finances, especially the ongoing expenses of finishing the radio station in Tahdzibichen.
