Coy and Nancy Shaw
SALVATION
In 1968 while attending college, Coy was saved as a result of the personal witnessing of another college student. Nancy was saved when she was nine years old and soon after surrendered her life to serve the Lord wherever He led.
Nancy, at the age of sixteen, realized she had never asked Jesus to forgive her of her sins. In a revival meeting, she went forward and accepted Jesus as her Savior. Soon afterward, the Lord spoke to her concerning the surrender of her life to Him as a missionary or whatever He wanted. Following the Lord’s leading, Nancy enrolled in Tennessee Temple University to prepare herself for Christian service.
GOD’S CALLING AND MARRIAGE
By the time Coy graduated from college, he knew God wanted him to prepare for full- time ministry. In 1970, he enrolled in Temple Baptist Theological Seminary. It was during this time that he met Nancy. On August 12, 1973, they were married. Later that year during the Missions Conference of the Highland Park Baptist Church, the Lord called them to be missionaries in Brazil.
MINISTRY IN BRAZIL (1976–2003)
In December of 1976, Coy, Nancy, and their two small boys arrived in Brazil. After completing their language studies, they moved to the city of Piracicaba in the state of São Paulo. The city had a population of about 280,000 and only one Baptist church of any type. A building was rented and the Fundamental Baptist Church was started. While working with the Fundamental Baptist Church, several other ministries were begun, including a daughter church and a children's ministry in a government housing development.
In 1995, the Shaws moved to the state of Tocantins to begin a church in the capital city of Palmas. Unfortunately, due to problems of pride and an unforgiving spirit within the congregation, the church plant was not successful. However, a prison ministry was established that the Lord greatly blessed. Many were saved and some of the inmates would have services on their own. There was also a rural ministry to reach people who lived far from the church in town.
MINISTRY IN NEW YORK CITY (2003–2012)
In 2003, the Lord directed the Shaws attention to the large Brazilian population in New York City. A Baptist church in Queens offered the use of their building to begin a Portuguese language church.
RETURN TO BRAZIL (2013–2023)
In 2008, Coy and Nancy visited Brazil for the 30th anniversary of the church in Piracicaba. At that time, the church was doing very well. Later, however, due to leadership problems, the church suffered two splits and for three years the church was without a pastor. The two remaining families in the church asked Coy and Nancy to return to Brazil and help the church “get back on its feet.” On September 18, 2013, they arrived in Brazil to begin “rebuilding” the church. The Lord blessed and the church began to grow. During this time, the church was remodeled and the church called a Brazilian pastor.
In 2020, Pastor Paulo Castelan invited the Shaws to come to the city of Franca and help with the ministries of the Independent Baptist Church. For three years Coy served as the Academic Dean of the seminary and Nancy was responsible for children’s ministries.
BECOMING A PART OF ARM
The ARM Personnel of BIMI are Assistance & Relief Missionaries who have served the Lord faithfully for many years in missions but are no longer able to carry out the rigorous tasks associated with their previous ministry. As ARM missionaries, Coy and Nancy are raising funds for the construction of a church in Brazil plus helping a church in the United States while the congregation looks for a pastor.
